Rhubarb Cake Batter

My mom has an ancient cookbook from the St. Lawrence Seaway region of Quebec, an area known for it’s incredible fertility. This cake is a slight modification of a "Sunday breakfast" inclusion, stuffed with fresh rhubarb and made tender with buttermilk. A rich, buttery topping bakes on like a sweet, spicy crown!

Here is a quote by Nicolas Sarkozy from 2006, before he became French President: “Security is the responsibility of the State, I am against militias, I am against the private ownership of firearms, and I’m trying to make you think about that. If you are assaulted by an armed burglar, he’ll use his weapon more effectively than you anyway so you’re risking your life. If the criminal is not armed and you are and you shoot, your life will be ruined, because killing someone over a theft is not in line with the republican values that are mine. The private ownership of firearms is dangerous. I understand your exasperation for having been burglarized two times, I understand the fear that your wife and daughter may have but the answer is in the efficiency of the police and the efficiency of the judiciary process, the answer is not in having guns at home.” Yes, but what happens when the state neither can nor wants to protect its citizens, which is clearly the case in France and in many other Western countries today? Here is another quote by the same man, this time as president, in July 2008, when he announced the creation of a new “Mediterranean Union” in a huge meeting between European and Arab leaders: “The goal of this summit for the Mediterranean, of this Union for the Mediterranean, is that we learn to love each other instead of continuing to hate each other and wage war,” Sarkozy told a news conference. That same month he also declared that Ireland will have to hold a second …

Gluten Free Yeast Bread

An gluten free loaf with amazing flavor. The millet flour gives this bread a wonderful buttery color, and luscious flavor. Besides the millet flour, the recipe calls for sorghum flour, tapioca flour, potato starch, and cornstarch.
This is from Gluten-Free Baking Classics by Annalisa Roberts.
It is listed as a French Bread, but the texture is much softer and VERY flavorful. I was expecting to need to add some Earth Balance or dip it in olive oil, but the bread was great all by itself!
Like most GF bread items, it is best the day it is baked. I’d suggest baking it in two small loaves and freezing one.
Very quick and easy to make up. Recipe posted by Ellen Allard on her Gluten Free Diva blog.

Still as good as nearly two years ago! Great tasting food, but Annie Smithers seems more exciting, although the seasonal antipasti is still a favourite.

I’m really getting into this Kim Chee making thing. Yum! And it is so easy and inexpensive. (And makes me smell so offensive!) This batch was two large heads of napa cabbage, one whole head of garlic, crushed, about 1.5 inches of ginger root, sliced very thin, and a little less than 1/4 cup of crushed red pepper. (Plus the pickling salt, of course.)
